One Day until Rebirth Celebration

She was back in Rona’s office. Surrounded by the women from Earth again. She should have been worried, should have been thinking about how to chase down the rest of the Tel agents. Instead she was on baby duty while Laney and Kendall got caught up. They knew what had happened yesterday so Zola had been stunned when Laney entered and handed her Zeus.

Everything was different since yesterday.

Her mother was actually in the room, and for the first time in years Zola didn’t feel like she had to be on guard against the woman that had given birth to her. She knew better than to trust her yet, but she actually felt hopeful. How long had it been since she’d experienced that? So she was sitting on Rona’s comfortable couch, snuggling Laney’s sweet baby, when her comm chimed with a message from Jarek. She smiled until she got it wiggled out of her pocket and read the text.

I need to talk to you. Meet me at the tunnel entrance.

Her stomach sunk. Her first thought was that he’d changed his mind about her. About them. She brushed the insecurity aside and reread the message. Something had happened that he didn’t want her to hear from someone else, she guessed. Damn. She’d been having such a good morning. She stood and instantly had everyone’s attention.

“Jarek needs to talk to me about something,” she said, handing Zeus back to his mother. “I may be awhile.”

Her dread grew with every step. By the time she reached Jarek, his needing to talk had grown into something monumentally bad in her mind. His expression when she met him sure as hell didn’t help.

“What’s happened?”

“Your friends were found dumped in the desert a few miles outside the city,” he said softly, getting right to the point.

She appreciated that for a split second before his words sank in. She couldn’t identify what she was feeling, much less deal with it. Hurt, anger, sorrow, rage? And pain. So much pain. Raj and Owen had been her last connection to her brother. Gone now. She forced herself to shut down. Detach. She let the smooth mask of the assassin side of her slide into place. But she knew it wouldn’t last long.

“Get me out of here, Jarek,” she whispered. “I need to be alone.”

She could feel her control slipping and she refused to break down in front of witnesses. He didn’t argue or question her, just took her hand, led her through the tunnel, and back to his rooms. Their rooms. She took a deep breath of relief when the door slid shut behind them, but she was at a loss as to what to do next.

“Want to go down to the beach?” he asked.

It was more a demand, and despite the turmoil shredding her heart she smiled. A week ago she would have refused to follow his orders. She understood now that he was taking care of her the best way he knew how. He just couldn’t help himself.
